Mitutoyo Digimatic micrometers are high accuracy, excellent quality Japanese made digital micrometers with carbide faces They are easy to use and very reasonably priced. There is no excuse for buying cheap Chinese imitations.
IP65 affords good protection against coolants, cutting oils, grinding dust and water spray. The manufacturer suggests anti-corrosion treatment after exposure to keep the micrometer in top condition. Instructions are included.
This is the ideal digital micrometer when SPC output is not required. It is an excellent choice for both beginner and professional alike.
All micrometers except the 0-1" ship with a measuring rod which is required to zero-set your micrometer. The 0-1" micrometer does not need a measuring rod, because the zero is set when the anvils are completely closed.
These currently ship in plastic boxes although the manufacturer changes storage boxes from time to time.
This model converts from inch to metric at the touch of a button. Like other Mitutoyo digimatic micrometers, you can set zero at any point.
Repairs may not be economical if something goes wrong (and eventually it will). Electronic components change from year to year as you well know. Parts for gages more than a few years old will quickly be obsolete. Fortunately, Mitutoyo gages are very reliable with rarely a problem. They also have a good manufacturer's warranty.
Available with friction thimble or ratchet stop thimble. You may want to keep all the micrometers in your shop conformed to one style or the other. User "feel" will affect readings and switching thimble styles may result in unwanted variations. Which style to use is purely a personal preference.
Mitutoyo micrometer with friction thimble.
Ratchet Stop Thimble
The friction thimble is shorter by about half-an-inch than the ratchet type micrometer. There is a smoothly rotating sleeve on the thimble and your micrometer will stop turning the moment it touches the part to be measured.
Ratchet stop thimble: turn the larger diameter knurled part of the thimble to approach the measured surface and then close in with the plastic end. When the anvil makes contact it will start to "click". Turn the thimble for two or three clicks, keeping the number of clicks constant from one measurement to the other. This method makes sure that you do not overtighten the thimble and introduce unwanted operator error.
